Quarterly Business Receipts Indices for Service Industries
for the Second Quarter of 2005
***********************************************************

Business receipts in value terms of all service industries increased in the second quarter of 2005 over a year earlier, according to the provisional business receipts indices released today (September 16) by the Census and Statistics Department (C&SD).

2.  Comparing the second quarter of 2005 with a year earlier, business receipts of the real estate and hotel industries increased by 41.2% and 22.4% respectively.

3.  The increase in business receipts of the real estate industry was fuelled by the buoyant property market, while that of the hotel industry was mainly attributable to the sustained growth in inbound tourism.

4.  Other service industries that recorded more notable increases in business receipts included the transport (+15.1%), insurance (+14.5%), banking (+11.6%), financing (except banking) (+11.1%), storage (+10.8%) and import and export trades (+10.3%).

5.  Analysed by service domain, comparing the second quarter of 2005 with a year earlier, business receipts of the tourism, convention and exhibition services domain increased by 11.9%, also attributable to the sustained growth in inbound tourism.  During the same period, business receipts of the computer and information services domain increased by 27.2%.

6.  Comparing the second quarter of 2005 with the first quarter of 2005, and bearing in mind that this comparison might be affected by seasonal factors, business receipts of most service industries increased.  Larger increases were recorded in the insurance (+12.4%), import and export trades (+11.3%), transport (+7.9%), storage (+7.8%) and business services (+6.5%) industries.  On the other hand, decreases in business receipts were recorded in the restaurants (-3.1%) and film entertainment (-2.2%) industries.

7.  Table 1 presents provisional business receipts indices for service industries and service domains for the second quarter of 2005, with the quarterly average of business receipts indices in 2000 taken as 100.  Also included are comparisons of the business receipts indices between the second quarter of 2004 and the second quarter of 2005 and between the first quarter of 2005 and the second quarter of 2005.

8.  Table 2 shows the time series of the 2000-based business receipts indices for the recent five quarters.

9.  A major source of data used for compiling the business receipts indices is the Quarterly Survey of Service Industries conducted by the C&SD.

10.  Regarding the tourism, convention and exhibition services domain, part of the data are obtained from the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

11.  A service domain differs from a service industry in that it comprises those economic activities straddling different industries but are somehow related to a common theme.  It may include all activities carried out by all establishments in a service industry that is closely related to the domain.  For a service industry that is less closely related, however, only a portion of the establishments in the industry or even only part of the economic activities of the establishments is related to the domain.  Tourism is a good example.  It includes all activities of all hotels and travel agents; and some (those involving visitors as customers) but not all of the activities of restaurants, retailers and transport operators.

12.  Details on the compilation method of the business receipts indices are given in the report "Quarterly Business Receipts Indices for Service Industries, Second Quarter 2005".
