Duo sentenced for passing and custody of counterfeit
banknotes

    A 24-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were each sentenced to three years¡¦ imprisonment at District Court today (September 13) after being convicted of counterfeit banknotes related offences.

     The court heard that the woman passed a $500 counterfeit banknote for the purchase of some snacks at a convenience store in Jordan Road, Yau Ma Tei in the afternoon of April 2, 2005.

Suspecting the banknote was a counterfeit one, the store keeper reported the case to Police.  The woman was then arrested and taken back to the Police Station for enquiries.

After initial investigations, the woman was released and put under surveillance by officers of Commercial Crime Bureau.

Police subsequently search the woman¡¦s place of residence in a guesthouse in Prince Edward Road in Kowloon City at about 10 pm the same day.  During this operation Police seized another 100 pieces of $500 counterfeit banknotes and arrested the 24-year-old woman and the 20-year-old man who were found at scene.  

The 24-year-old woman was later charged with one count of passing counterfeit notes and jointly charged with the 20-year-old man of one count of custody of counterfeit notes.

Both defendants pleaded guilty to the charges and were convicted on September 9, 2005.  The court accepted Police's application for enhanced sentencing under the Organized and Serious Crimes Ordinance and sentenced the duo each to three years' imprisonment today.
