****************************************************

Police seized over $8 million worth of suspected smuggled goods and arrested two men during an operation in the west of Lantau Island last (September 12) night.

At about 9.30 pm yesterday, officers of the Marine Police Small Boat Division spotted a speedboat with two men aboard coming out from Tai O Village at high speed.  The speedboat accelerated to flee immediately when Marine Police indicated to intercept it.

Marine Police gave a chase to the speedboat at once and intercepted it at sea off about one nautical mile southwest of Kai Yet Kok.

A total of 82 boxes of cargo, including computer parts, LCD displays and mobile phones as well as four bags of shark fin were found on the speedboat.  The total value of the cargoes was estimated at $8.35 million.

The two men, aged 36 and 37, on board the speedboat could not produce the manifest document and were then arrested for attempting to export unmanifested cargo.  The 36-year-old coxswain was further arrested for failing to stop and endangering life at sea.

The two arrested men were still being detained for enquiries.

The vessel was towed to the Marine Police Base at Tai Lam.

Investigaions by Regional Crime Unit, Marine, are still proceeding.
