Speech by CE at opening of Hong Kong Disneyland
*********************************************** The following is the speech by the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, at the grand opening ceremony of the Hong Kong Disneyland this (September 12) morning.
Vice President Zeng, Mr Eisner, Mr Iger, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen,
It gives me great pleasure to welcome Mickey Mouse and all his friends to Hong Kong, Asia's world city.
Six years ago we signed a deal with the Walt Disney Company to bring the Magic Kingdom to Hong Kong. Today, after a mammoth effort by all involved, we will soon officially swing open the doors to this magnificent new theme park and resort.
Today's Grand Opening marks the beginning of a new chapter for tourism in Hong Kong - a chapter in which Hong Kong will develop as a premium family destination in Asia.
The arrival of the world's most widely recognised and best-loved theme park in Hong Kong will allow us to provide visitors from all over the region with a fun-filled and diversified experience. A number of other family-friendly tourism attractions are due to open over the next six months.
We will capitalise on the drawing power of the Disney brand to complement our renowned strengths in dining and shopping, and as a city that perfectly blends East and West.
Hong Kong Disneyland is a strategic investment by the Hong Kong SAR Government in our tourism sector. The park will provide thousands of direct and indirect jobs and, over the long term, bring billions of dollars of economic benefit to our economy.
We warmly and wholeheartedly welcome the Disney family to Hong Kong. I am sure that Hong Kong Disneyland will be a great success.
Thank you very much.
