Police appeal to deception victims to come forward
************************************************** Police today (September 9) urged victims who fell prey to advertisement deception involving taking out insurance policies but did not report their cases to come forward.
Initial enquiries revealed that an insurance agency had placed advertisments in a local magazine claiming to be agent of an insurance company. In response to the advertisement, a victim contacted the agency for extension of his third party vehicle insurance in early July.
After a series of telephone negotiation with the agency, the victim eventually deposited $2,760 into a bank account designated by the agency. Subsequently the victim received a fax copy of the cover note purportedly issued by the insurance company.
Since then the victim had never received the formal insurance policy and therefore he checked with the insurance company. The cover note was then confirmed to be false and a report was made to the Police on August 23.
Investigations revealed that Police had also received another report in August with the same modus operanti where the victim deposited $3,800 into the same account.
Following intensive investigations, Police arrested a 27-year-old man who was the account holder of the said account in Kowloon City on September 4. The man was arrested for obtaining property by deception and was released on bail pending further enquiries.
Police urged members of the public who might have been deceived by similar modus operandi to report to any police station.
