The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has appointed Professor Chan Ka-keung as Chairman of the Consumer Council for two years with effect from September 16, 2005. The Government has also re-appointed Mr Larry Kwok Lam-kwong as the council's vice-chairman for two years with effect from October 7, 2005.

Professor Chan is the Dean of the School of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He has extensive experience in public service and served on the Consumer Council between January 1, 2003, and December 31, 2004.

"During his service on the council, Professor Chan had demonstrated strong interest and commitment to work on consumer protection. With his expertise in finance and management, and enthusiasm in consumer protection work, we are confident that Professor Chan will provide strong leadership and lead the council forward in the coming years," a government spokesman said.

Mr Kwok, a practising lawyer and accountant, was first appointed as the vice-chairman of the council on October 7, 2001.

"Mr Kwok has provided sound legal advice to the council on issues relating to trade practices and legal protection for consumers. His professional knowledge and enthusiasm in consumer protection work will continue to be of tremendous value to the council," the spokesman added.

"We would also like to thank Professor Andrew Chan Chi-fai, who will retire from the council after serving as its chairman for six years, for his valuable contribution to the work of the Council. Among other things, he spearheaded a comprehensive review of the council's work covering its organisational structure and strategy for promoting consumer protection."

The appointment of Professor Chan and the re-appointment of Mr Kwok  are published in the Gazette today (September 9).
