Operator of unlicensed guesthouse fined
***************************************

A woman was fined $10,000 at the Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts today (September 7) after pleading guilty to operating and managing an unlicensed guesthouse in Tsim Sha Tsui.

The court heard that in February this year, officers of the Home Affairs Department's (HAD) Office of the Licensing Authority (OLA) inspected the premises on Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui and found that the guesthouse, comprising six rooms equipped for sleeping accommodation, was in operation without a certificate of exemption or a licence as required under the Hotel and Guesthouse Accommodation Ordinance (HAGAO).

The woman, who was the operator and management personnel of the unlicensed guesthouse, was subsequently charged with contravening the HAGAO.

An HAD spokesman stressed that it was a criminal offence to operate or manage an unlicensed guesthouse.

The spokesman reiterated that unlicensed guesthouses would not be tolerated and enforcement action would be taken against them to ensure the safety of patrons of these establishments.

He also appealed to the public to report unlicensed guesthouses to the OLA on 2881 7498.
