The Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose SK Lee has met officials from the Department of Public Security of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, for an exchange of views and experiences in the fight against violence and terrorism.
At a meeting yesterday (September 5) with the Deputy Director-General of Public Security of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Mr Liu Keqin, Mr Lee said it was important to have international cooperation including intelligence exchange in order to win the battle against violence and terrorism.
Mr Lee said the biggest challenge for the law enforcement departments of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government this year was to ensure that the upcoming 6th WTO Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong in December went smoothly in the face of possible violence displayed by demonstrators and protesters from Hong Kong and overseas.
"All the concerned departments and agencies have geared up to meeting the challenge and I have full confidence that the meeting will be held successfully in Hong Kong," he said.
Mr Lee also discussed the problems of drug trafficking and illegal immigration with Xinjiang public security officials.
Before the meeting, Mr Lee saw an exhibition on the efforts of the Xinjiang law enforcement authorities in fighting against violence and terrorism in the region since the early 1990s.
Mr Lee will continue his visit in Xinjiang by visiting anti-terrorism and border security facilities at Altay and Yining between today (September 6) and Thursday (September 8).
He will meet officials of the Guangdong Public Security Bureau in Guangzhou before returning to Hong Kong on September 9.
