smuggled goods
*****************************************************

Marine Police arrested a 46-year-old man and seized $1.5 million worth of suspected smuggled goods off Basalt Island early this morning (September 1).

At about 2.30 am, officers of the Small Boat Division spotted two unlit speedboats off east Basalt Island. When Police officers tried to stop them for enquiries, one of the speedboats accelerated to avoid Police interception.

After a hot pursuit, a sampan with a 46-year-old Hong Kong man onboard was intercepted. Another speedboat loaded with over 100 boxes of computer components and film with a total value of $1.5 million was later found drifting nearby.

Police officers arrested the man for attempting to export unmanifested cargo. He is still being detained for enquiries. The case will be handed over to the Customs and Excise Department for follow-up action.
