The "Hong Kong Art Biennial 2005", one of the largest open art competitions in Hong Kong, has selected six winning awards from more than 1,500 entries.
The adjudicators said the winning entries, in a wide range of media, reflected the diversity of Hong Kong art as well as the styles and characteristics of contemporary Hong Kong artists.
This open competition, now in its 15th year, is presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and organised by the Hong Kong Museum of Art. It aims to encourage more artistic creation, participation and exchange among artists, enhance public appreciation of art, and promote status in the international ambience.
The panel of adjudicators was composed of nine renowned local artists and scholars and four artists from overseas and the Mainland. They are the Chinese painter, art critic and award winner of the Biennial Exhibition, Chui Tze-hung, the Chinese painter and award winner of the Biennial Exhibition, Ou Da-wei, the adviser to the Museum of Art and the Professor of the Fine Arts Department, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Mok Kar-leung, the Senior Lecturer of the Fine Arts Department, School of Creative Arts, Sciences and Technology, The Hong Kong Institute of Education, Lai Ming-hoi, the potter Wong Lai-ching, the sculptor, adviser to the Museum of Art and award winner of the Biennial Exhibition, Lai Yat-fong, the Exhibition Manager of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Grace Cheng, individual artist on video and new media, May Fung, the art critic, the adviser to the Museum of Art and the Professor of Department of Religion and Philosophy, Hong Kong Baptist University, Man Kit-wah, the Director of the Research Department, the China National Museum of Fine Arts, Liu Xilin, calligrapher and Assistant Director of the Chinese Calligraphy Association, Zhang Hai, the Artistic Director of the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Yuko Hasegawa, and the Curator of Contemporary Art, San Diego Museum of Art, Betti-Sue Hertz.
A total of 231 works were selected by the local adjudicators for the second round of judging. The final selection was conducted by the 13 adjudicators and six prizes of excellence were selected. The adjudicators based their decision on originality, creativity and technical competence of the entries. The results are as follows:

Each winner will receive a cash award of $25,000 and a trophy. The six winning awards and the other 103 selected works will be presented at the Museum of Art from December 16, 2005, to March 5, 2006.
