2 plus 3 Carnival for Healthy Diet Campaign
*******************************************

The Department of Health, (DH) in collaboration with the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department and the Auxiliary Medical Service, jointly organised a "2 plus 3" Carnival at Tai Po Hui Market today (August 27) to raise public awareness on the importance of balanced diet and to promote fruits and vegetables consumption.

Department staff shared tips on healthy eating with participants of the Carnival. The interactive games provided a fun way to learn the concept of "2 plus 3" while the free check-up on Body Mass Index (BMI) allowed participants to get a better understanding of healthy body weight.

Extensive studies in recent years show that eating enough fruits and vegetables can help prevent many chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, heart diseases, cancers and obesity.

The department launched a territory-wide healthy diet campaign, titled "2 plus 3 A Day" in June 2005.  The campaign aims to raise the community awareness on healthy diet and promote the consumption of at least two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables every day as part of a balanced diet in order to promote optimal health.

One serving of fruit is approximately defined as one piece of medium-sized fruit e.g. orange and apple while one serving of vegetable approximately equals half bowl of cooked vegetables e.g. leafy vegetables, gourds or mushrooms.

People can also visit the "2 plus 3" website: http://2plus3.cheu.gov.hk or call the Health Education Hotline: 28330111, of the Department of Health for more information.
