Fantasia Film Festival ********************************************
Montreal's Fantasia International Film Festival ended earlier this week with the screening of Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury", hosted by the film's leading actress Nora Miao.
Miao was given a standing ovation at the Concordia Hall Theatre when she was introduced to the 700 viewers who responded enthusiastically to the Bruce Lee classic.
The film was one of the 10 pictures, including some legendary Shaw Brothers' films and Hong Kong's latest productions, presented by the Hong Kong Economic & Trade Office (Canada) in the "Hong Kong Cinema" section of the festival. About 100 films, mostly from Asia, were screened during the 19-day festival, which recorded an all-time-high attendance of 75,000 people this year.
Derek Yee's "One Nite in Mongkok", which was screened to mark the festival's Hong Kong Night, was given one of the two 50th Anniversary Sequences "Special Mention" awards. The judges described the film as a thriller "which lingers on the humanity of its characters, instead of on the stylised violence," and "a fascinating path for the Hong Kong cinema to follow in the coming years."
