Fugitive handed back to Hong Kong

*********************************

A 41-year-old man wanted in connection with a wounding case in 1997 was handed back to Hong Kong Police from Malaysia today (May 4).

The man was suspected to be in connection with a wounding case in which six men were seriously wounded on Lockhart Road in Wan Chai on January 31, 1997.

He was arrested on July 16 in the same year but later absconded to Malaysia while on Police bail.

In late June 2004, he was arrested by the Malaysian Police for drugs related offence in a multi-national joint anti-drugs operation and Hong Kong Police was notified.

A formal request for the arrest and extradition of the fugitive was made and he was arrested on August 9, 2004 pursuant to the request.

He was escorted back to Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Police officers today.

The man was subsequently charged with six counts of wounding with intent and will appear in the Eastern Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (May 5).

Today's successful extradition is a result of the close co-operation among the Interpol Malaysia, the Mutual Legal Assistance Unit of the Department of Justice as well as the Liaison Bureau and Crime Headquarters of Hong Kong Island of the Hong Kong Police.
