*******************************************************

Hong Kong students have brought glory home by winning five First Prizes, one Second Prize, and 10 Third Prizes at "The 1st Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad".

Tsui Lok-man from Sing Yin Secondary School ranked second at the competition with his overall scores.

"The 1st Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad" was held simultaneously at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Shenzhen Secondary School on January 29. The competition was jointly organised by the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad Committee and the Physics Teaching Professional Commission of the Chinese Society of Education. A total of 174 top secondary students participated in the competition. Among them, 148 were the elite from secondary schools of nine provinces on the Mainland. The 26 Hong Kong participants were trainees of the Physics Enhancement Programme of the Education and Manpower Bureau's 'Support Measures for the Exceptionally Gifted Students Scheme'. They were selected to take part in a series of enhancement courses after they had achieved outstanding performance in the Hong Kong Physics Olympiad 2004.

"The 1st Pan-Pearl River Delta Physics Olympiad" aims at enhancing students' understanding of physics and motivation in learning, and exploring their talents in the subject. It provides a challenging opportunity for elites of physics on the Mainland and Hong Kong and also serves to boost the interflow of ideas and practices in physics education among provinces in China and Hong Kong.
