New edition of legal terms glossary published

*********************************************

The latest edition of the "English-Chinese Glossary of Legal Terms", a handy reference tool for the legal professionals and the public for locating bilingual legal terms and expressions used in the Hong Kong legislation, has been published by the Department of Justice.

A department spokesman said today (December 30) that the updated version, now in its fourth edition, incorporated some 3,000 new entries taken from legislation enacted by the Legislative Council from January 1, 1998, to September 30, 2004.

"In this edition, we have also substituted current usage for outdated renditions and have updated reference provisions that have been amended or repealed."

The Glossary consists of three volumes. Volumes one and two contain 32,000 selected terms and expressions arranged in separate entries in alphabetical order.

Volume three is made up of two appendices. Appendix 1 is a list of the English-Chinese short titles and citations of our laws (including subsidiary legislation) as well as the list of serial numbers of certain legislation as published in the Gazette and their corresponding descriptions. Appendix 2 contains an updated list of major government organisations.

Starting from January 4, 2005, the publication will be on sale at the Government Publications Sales Section, Room 402, Murray Building, Garden Road, Central or the online government bookstore at http://bookstore.esdlife.com. Each set of the Glossary will be sold at $148.

Ends/Thursday, December 30, 2004
