The Department of Health today (December 22) urged members of the public not to buy or take a proprietary Chinese medicine called Ng Chung Brand Tik Dak Win.
Laboratory tests revealed that the lead content of the product exceeds the maximum permitted limit. The Department of Health of the Government of Macau Special Administrative Region has also previously recalled the drug for high levels of lead. Lead toxicity leads to anaemia, kidney failure, adverse effects on the nervous system, digestive system and circulatory system or even death.
A department spokesman said the manufacturer of the product, Lung Choy Shun Ng Chung Brand Medicine Factory, had been instructed to recall the products from the market immediately and to surrender them to the department.
"Members of the public who have purchased the product are advised to stop using them, dispose of the product or surrender it to the Pharmaceutical Service of Department of health at 3/F Public Health Laboratory Centre, 382 Nam Cheong Street, Kowloon during office hours," the spokesman said.
Members of the public can call the manufacturer's hotline at 24314780 for matters related to recall of the product.
The department has also set up a telephone enquiry service at 23195119 for members of the public during office hours.
