DH instructs recall of Chinese medicine products containing western drug ingredients

The Department of Health (DH) today (September 8) announced the recall of four Chinese medicine products which contained a trace level of a western drug ingredient, Ephedrine.

These products are manufactured by Sheng Chun Tang Pharmaceutical Industrial Company Limited of Taiwan and imported by May Fair Medical Supplies Limited.

The products, although containing a western drug ingredient, are not registered under the Pharmacy and Poisons Ordinance.

A spokesman for DH said, "DH has instructed the importer to recall the products from about 250 Chinese medicine practitioners, clinics and retailers and surrender them to DH," he said.

As the level of Ephedrine found in these four products is very low, they are unlikely to cause adverse health effect.

Members of the public may call the importer's hotline at 2721 0291 for matters related to recall of the product.

DH will also set up a hotline 2319 2839 for other enquiries during office hours from tomorrow.
