Council Chairmen of CityU and PolyU are appointed

**************************************************

The Government announced today (December 19) that the Chief Executive had appointed Dr Gordon Wu Ying-sheung as Council Chairman of City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and Mr Victor Lo Chung-wing as Council Chairman of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), both for a period of three years with effect from January 1, 2004.

"We are pleased to have Dr Wu to succeed the retiring Mr Norman Leung Nai-pang as the Chairman of the CityU Council. Dr Wu has been the Council Chairman of the PolyU for more than six years. He is familiar with the developments of the higher education sector in Hong Kong and experienced in university governance. His appointment to the CityU Council will no doubt provide the strong leadership the university needs to sustain its development," a Government spokesman said.

Dr Wu, Chairman of Hopewell Holdings Limited, was a member of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Commission on Strategic Development. He is currently a member of the Hong Kong Logistics Development Council. Upon appointment to the CityU Council, Dr Wu has resigned from his Chairmanship at the PolyU Council.

The incumbent Treasurer of the CityU Council, Mr Chung Shui-ming, has been appointed as the Deputy Chairman. Mr Raymond Or Ching-fai, another member of the Council, has been appointed as the Treasurer. Both appointments will also take effect from January 1, 2004.

On Mr Victor Lo's appointment, the spokesman said, "Mr Lo is a suitable candidate to lead the PolyU as the university aspires to scale new heights in the years to come. Mr Lo has rich experience in public services. He is the Chairman of Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation and the Honorary President of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries General Committee," the spokesman said.

Mr Lo, Chairman and Chief Executive of Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited, was a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and Hong Kong Productivity Council. Mr Lo was also active in community service in the education sector. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Lingnan University Council in the early 1990s, and a member of the Sir Edward Youde Memorial Fund Council. Last year, the PolyU also invited him to chair its Design Task Force to advise on how the University can position itself and further develop this area of strength.

The spokesman expressed gratitude to Mr Norman Leung Nai-pang for his contributions and dedication to City U during his term of office. Mr Leung will retire from the university council after December 31.

"Mr Leung and Dr Wu have been the Chairmen of the CityU and PolyU Councils since 1997 respectively. Under their leadership, the two universities have made noteworthy achievements in the past years," he added.

The appointments will be gazetted on December 24.
