The Hong Kong Logistics Development Council (LOGSCOUNCIL) held its last meeting for 2003 today (December 19) to review progress in major initiatives and to discuss key tasks to be pursued in 2004.

"Although the SARS outbreak affected the economy of Hong Kong, the resilience of the logistics industry withstood the challenge and reinforced Hong Kong's vital position as Asia's premiere transportation and logistics hub," said Mr Stephen Ip, Secretary for Economic Development and Labour and LOGSCOUNCIL Chairman.

At the meeting, members were updated on the progress of the initiatives undertaken this year, including the development of the Digital Trade and Transportation Network (DTTN) and the Value Added Logistics Park (VALP). Members were also briefed on the implementation of CEPA in respect of the logistics-related sectors.

As part of the continued efforts to promote Hong Kong's status as a leading international logistics hub, LOGSCOUNCIL will sponsor Informa & Maritime Transport in staging Logistics Hong Kong, an international logistics conference and exhibition in Hong Kong on May 18 to 20, 2004 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Commenting on the prospects of the logistics industry in 2004, Mr Ip said, "There is every reason to believe that the future will be even brighter for the logistics industry. The implementation of CEPA in January 2004 promises new opportunities for Hong Kong logistics service providers in the growing China market. I am confident that our enterprises and practitioners will leverage their proven skills and capitalise on the growing demands for their service."
