Results of the 2002 Annual Survey of Industrial Production

According to the results of the 2002 Annual Survey of Industrial Production released today (December 19) by the Census and Statistics Department, the gross output of the manufacturing sector amounted to $172.4 billion in 2002, down by 13.1% from a year earlier.

2. The gross surplus of the manufacturing sector, which is equal to gross output less total operating expenditure, decreased by 16.1% from a year earlier to $20.4 billion in 2002. The gross surplus accounted for 11.8% of the gross output in 2002, 0.5 of a percentage point lower than that of 12.3% in 2001.

3. The value added of the manufacturing sector, which is a measure of its contribution to Hong Kong's Gross Domestic Product, amounted to $53.4 billion in 2002, or a decrease of 13.6% from a year earlier.

4. Within the manufacturing sector, the five largest broad industry groups in terms of value added in 2002 were (1) paper products, printing and publishing industry; (2) basic metals, fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment industry; (3) food, beverages and tobacco industry; (4) electrical and electronic products industry; and (5) textiles industry (including knitting). They together accounted for 79.1% of the total value added of the whole sector.

Comparing 2002 with a year earlier, decreases in value added of various magnitudes were observed in eight broad industry groups, with more pronounced declines occurring in the electrical and electronic products industry (-46.3%); the leather, wood and cork products industry (-24.2%); the chemical, rubber and non-metallic mineral products industry (-18.7%); the textiles (including knitting) industry (-13.8%), and the basic metals, fabricated metal products, machinery and equipment industry (-8.5%).

6. On the other hand, other miscellaneous manufacturing industries increased by 14.8% and the food, beverage and tobacco industry by 6.4%.

7. The attached table (text version of table) shows the principal industrial production statistics by broad industry group.

8. The survey was conducted from January to end October 2003. Apart from manufacturing establishments, the survey also enumerated establishments engaged in quarrying; and supply of electricity, gas and water.
