A spokesman for the Immigration Department reminded today (September 29) that holders of the existing identity (ID) card who were born in 1968 or 1969 should apply for new smart ID cards on or before November 15, 2003.
Since September 15 when the Replacement Exercise was open to the above persons, the nine Smart ID Card Centres have received a total of 59,500 applications, representing 20% of the eligible applicants.
"Response from applicants has been very positive," the spokesman said. "In view of the good response, we have reserved more time slots for eligible applicants to make advance bookings."
Statistics revealed that over 85% of the applicants who had made advance bookings attended the ID card centres on time to submit their applications while about 15% of the reserved time slots were wasted because the applicants did not show up as scheduled.
"If the applicants did not change or cancel their bookings, the reserved time slots could not be released to other applicants," the spokesman explained. "Applicants should attend the Smart ID Card Centres punctually at the reserved time slots. If they are unable to attend as scheduled, they should change or cancel their bookings as early as possible."
"To provide service to applicants who have not made any advance booking, we have set aside some time slots at each centre for the "walk-in" applications but such time slots are limited. Applicants may also consider to apply in the Smart ID Card Centres at East Kowloon, West Kowloon, Sheung Shui or Tseung Kwan O as more unfilled time slots are available at these centres currently."
"Eligible applicants whose ID cards bear the 'A', or '***' symbols, or whose ID cards were issued on or after 1 January 1999 and bear the "R" symbol should bring along their existing ID card for applications. Other than the aforesaid categories, in addition to their existing ID cards, eligible applicants should bring along their travel documents showing their current residential status in Hong Kong," the spokesman added.
To avoid the last minute rush, eligible applicants who were born in 1968 or 1969 are advised to apply as early as possible. Appointment can be booked by telephone 1838 333, via website: www.esd.gov.hk or at any ESD kiosk.
