Famous Shanghainese restaurant chain expands in Hong Kong

*********************************************************

Xiao Nan Guo, a leading restaurant chain based in Shanghai, has invested HK$10 million to open its second restaurant in Hong Kong today (September 5).

The Xiao Nan Guo - Imperial House occupies a total of 22,000 square feet and is expected to create over 200 new jobs in Hong Kong.

The Associate Director-General of Investment Promotion at Invest Hong Kong, Mr John Rutherford, who officiated at the opening ceremony for this new outlet in Causeway Bay, welcomed the expansion of the restaurant in Hong Kong.

He said, "It is a vote of confidence in Hong Kong's economy. With the impact of SARS now diminishing, the hospitality industry is bouncing back strongly. The creation of 200 very welcome jobs is a real boost to the city.

"This new investment will enhance Hong Kong's position as the region's gourmet paradise by introducing innovative Shanghainese delicacies, made with top quality ingredients and prepared by top-class chefs. Hong Kong is home to over 7,000 restaurants, with virtually every international and Chinese regional cuisine available in the city."

Mr Rutherford further stressed that Hong Kong had become a popular first step for mainland companies looking to expand into the international market.

"Hong Kong's free economy, transparent legal system and skilled labour force are all key elements that make the city an ideal partner for Mainland companies to manage their international expansion. Our multicultural make-up also provides an excellent testing ground for Mainland products" he added.

The Xiao Nan Guo Group opened its first restaurant in Hong Kong in 2000. It quickly became popular among local customers and tourists. Encouraged by this success, the Group plans to grow its presence in Hong Kong even further, using the SAR as the springboard for its international expansion.

"From an investment perspective, Hong Kong offers great potential, especially with its business-friendly environment, simple and low tax system, good infrastructure and efficient and skilful workforce," the Director of Xiao Nan Guo, Ms Wang Hui Li said.

The new restaurant will feature two of China's most prominent culinary masters: Mr Li Yao Yun and Ms Ge Xian E. They are both directors of the Cuisine Association of China and were judges at the official contest to select China's leading chefs. Mr Li and Ms Ge will be based at the Imperial House as the CEO/Executive Chef and Deputy CEO/ Deputy Executive Chef, respectively.

Shanghai Xiao Nan Guo Restaurant Group was founded in 1987 in Shanghai. During the last 16 years, it has developed into a leading restaurant chain with 10 restaurants in Shanghai, employing over 2,000 people.

Invest Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government department dedicated to attracting and retaining foreign direct investment in Hong Kong.
