The Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) today (August 29) announced the appointment of Dr Cheung Kwok-wah as Chairman of the Committee on Home-School Co-operation (CHSC) and seven new members with effect from September 1, 2003.
Dr Cheung will succeed Dr Tsang Kit-man upon completion of the latter's service for a term of two years ending August 31, 2005.
The Permanent Secretary for Education and Manpower, Mrs Fanny Law, believed that with the knowledge of education and proven experience of Dr Cheung, the Committee under Dr Cheung's leadership would scale new heights in deepening home-school co-operation and enhancing education quality.
Mrs Law was glad that Dr Tsang Kit-man had accepted the re-appointment as a member of the Committee. She also extended her heartfelt thanks to eight outgoing members for their invaluable efforts in promoting home-school co-operation in previous years.
Dr Cheung, a father of three children, is an Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Education in the University of Hong Kong. He is currently the Chief Editor of "Hong Kong Teachers' Centre Journal", and was a member of EMB's Education Reform Liaison Team from 2000 to 2002. Being a member of the CHSC since September 2000, Dr Cheung has contributed many innovative ideas and his enthusiasm for promoting home-school co-operation is well noted.
The CHSC, established in 1993, is an advisory body under the EMB. Its main roles include promoting home-school co-operation and advising the Bureau and other government departments and non-government organisations on ways to promote positive parental involvement in education.
It is also tasked to encourage the setting up of parent-teacher associations (PTAs). To date, some 1,400 PTAs have been established in Hong Kong.
The new CHSC will comprise a total of 20 members from different walks of life, including full-time parents as wells as professionals in the Education, Clinical Psychology, Legal, Accountancy, Parent Education, Broadcasting, Medical and Commercial sectors.
