EMB releases anti-gambling teaching resources

**********************************

The Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) today (July 17) introduced a series of newly developed teaching resources to support schools in the promotion of education on the adverse impacts of gambling.

"We have attached great importance to the moral and healthy development of our students. Through a variety of learning activities, students are provided with amble opportunities to develop positive values and attitudes, healthy lifestyles and critical thinking skills to handle the problems arising from their daily encounters and social issues," an EMB spokesman said.

"In relation to the authorisation and regulation of soccer betting, EMB has been strengthening its support for schools to promote anti-gambling education."

The Bureau has recently developed and uploaded a series of teaching resources on gambling onto the Moral & Civic Education website (http://cd.emb.gov.hk/mce) for use by primary and secondary school teachers. They are aimed at helping students realise the adverse consequences of gambling and the importance of self-discipline, rationality and responsibility, and develop critical thinking, problem-solving and refusal skills.

The resources consist of teaching exemplars, case studies, stories, radio plays and online resources. Teachers may make use of the resources in the teaching of related subjects, or during moral education lessons, civic education lessons, form periods and assemblies.

"To help the youths realise the adverse consequences of gambling, schools, parents and the media have to make a concerted effort," the spokesman stressed.
