DH advises public to prevent heat stroke

*******************************

As the Hong Kong Observatory issued the very hot weather warning today (July 6), the Department of Health (DH) advised members of the public, particularly those engaged in outdoor activities, to take measures to prevent heat stroke in view of the prevailing hot weather.

The Assistant Director of Health (Personal Health Service), Dr Regina Ching said, "All people should ensure they drink enough water. If you are engaged in outdoor activities, make sure you replace the water lost from sweating and don't drink only when you feel thirsty. "

"You should avoid drinks containing caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar."

"You should also avoid very cold beverages because they can cause stomach cramps."

Particular attention should be paid to people who are at greater risk of heat-related illness -- children and elderly persons, over-weight persons and persons who are ill.

Patients on certain medications may also be more susceptible. They should consult their doctors for advice.

Other preventive measures to be taken during very hot weather include:

* Stay in cool and well-ventilated places, electric fans may be useful to increase comfort and to draw cool air into your home;

* Avoid exercising vigorously for long periods under the hot weather;

* If you must be out in the heat, try to plan your activities so that you are outdoors either before noon or in the evening;

* Never stay in a closed, parked vehicle; and

* Wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing. When outdoors, a wide-brimmed hat will provide shade and keep the head cool.

Dr Ching said that any person who does not feel well in the heat should seek medical attention immediately.

Members of the public can get more information on preventing heat stroke by calling the Department's 24-hour Central Health Education Unit (CHEU) Hotline 2833 0111 or by viewing CHEU's Homepage http://www.cheu.gov.hk.
