Medical staff awarded for exemplary bravery

The Government announced in the Gazette today (June 30) that six frontline public sector medical staff have been posthumously awarded the Bravery Awards for their exemplary bravery and selfless commitment displayed during the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic.  Dr. Tse Yuen-man has been awarded the Medal for Bravery (Gold) and the other five medical staff the Medal for Bravery (Silver) posthumously.



The following are the citations on the award recipients.



Medal for Bravery (Gold) (posthumous)

Dr Tse Yuen-man (deceased)



Dr Tse Yuen-man is posthumously awarded the Medal for Bravery (Gold) in full recognition of the exemplary bravery and selfless commitment that she had displayed in serving patients with the SARS disease. Dr Tse volunteered herself in taking charge of the SARS ward and delivering direct medical care and treatment for SARS patients in Tuen Mun Hospital.  In the full knowledge of the enormous risks for herself in performing the procedure, she repeatedly carried out intubation of her SARS patients in distress. She had worked with exceptional dedication, steadfastness and commitment in a selfless and fearless manner. By voluntarily putting her own life in extreme danger in order to save others, Dr Tse displayed noble gallantry of the highest order in carrying out her last duties.



Medal for Bravery (Silver) (posthumous)

Mr Lau Wing-kai (deceased)



Mr Lau Wing-kai is posthumously awarded the Medal for Bravery (Silver) in recognition of his commitment and perseverance displayed in providing direct and professional nursing care for SARS patients in Tuen Mun Hospital. Mr Lau's selfless and devoted service demonstrated a high degree of gallantry.



Ms Wong Kang-tai (deceased)



Ms Wong Kang-tai is posthumously awarded the Medal for Bravery (Silver) in recognition of her dedicated service as a Ward Attendant in Prince of Wales Hospital. Ms Wong never refrained from her duty to work in the medical ward that had been identified as the source of the SARS outbreak. Her steadfast commitment demonstrated a high degree of gallantry.



Ms Lau Kam-yung (deceased)

Ms Tang Heung-may (deceased)



Ms Lau Kam-yung and Ms Tang Heung-may, both former Health Care Assistants in United Christian Hospital, are posthumously awarded the Medal for Bravery (Silver) in recognition of their dedicated service offered at the peak of the SARS epidemic. Conscious of the imminent risks of infection whilst working in the hospital with regular admission of SARS patients, they chose to continue to carry out their duties without fear but with dedication and devotion. Ms Lau and Ms Tang both demonstrated a high degree of gallantry.



Dr Cheng Ha-yan, Kate (deceased)



Dr Cheng Ha-yan, Kate is posthumously awarded the Medal for Bravery (Silver) in recognition of her commitment and dedication whilst performing her last duties in the convalescence ward of Tai Po Hospital. Dr Cheng demonstrated a high degree of gallantry as she was among the first to have volunteered to work in the SARS ward to be set up in the hospital.
