Appointment of Director of Home Affairs Announced

The Government announced today (June 20) that Mrs Pamela Tan Kam Mi-wah, Commissioner for Labour, will take up the post of Director of Home Affairs on June 30, 2003. The post was vacated by Ms Shelley Lee Lai-kuen who took up the post of Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs on July 1, 2002.

Commenting on the appointment, the Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Joseph W P Wong, said: "Mrs Tan is an experienced Administrative Officer with proven leadership and good management skills. We are confident that she can lead the Home Affairs Department in meeting its challenges ahead."

A biographical note on Mrs Tan is as follows:

Aged 47, Mrs Tan joined the Administrative Service in October 1977 and rose to her present rank of Administrative Officer Staff Grade A on July 1, 2002.

Mrs Tan has served in various bureaux and departments, including the former Social Services Branch, Social Welfare Department, the former Finance Branch, the former Regional Services Department, the former Deputy Chief Secretary's Office, the former Trade and Industry Branch, the former Civil Service Branch, the former Monetary Affairs Branch and the Central Policy Unit. She was Commissioner of Insurance from December 1994 to August 1995; Deputy Secretary for Financial Services from September 1995 to February 1996; Director, Mandatory Provident Fund Office from March 1996 to February 1999; and Director of Administration and Development in the Department of Justice from February 1999 to June 2000. She has been Commissioner for Labour since June 2000.
