A 68-year-old man who was charged with 23 counts of theft in relation to diamond deals in 1998 was sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment at the District Court today (June 16).
The court heard that the man obtained diamonds from a diamond dealer on consignment terms on 23 occasions in 1998 on the condition that he should not sell the diamonds unless full payment has been made.
He sold the diamonds to customers between October and December 1998 but failed to make full payment to the dealer with an outstanding payment amounting to $6.5 million. A report was then made to the police.
He was convicted of all the charges and was sentenced to 30 months' imprisonment at the District Court today.
