A 48-year-old man who was wanted for a theft case reported in April this year together with $1.58 million cash was returned to the Hong Kong Police (HKP) from the Shenzhen Public Security Bureau (PSB) at the Huanggang Boundary Control Point at a handover ceremony today (June 12) attended by Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mr Lo Yik-kee and Deputy Director of Shenzhen PSB Mr Guan Lin-gen.
The suspect was a supervisor of a security company and on April 28, he collected two bags of cash amounted to $2.1 million at Mongkok. However, he reported to his company on the same day that the two bags were found missing and a report was made to the Police.
Police enquiries revealed that the man left for the Mainland in the small hours of April 29. Police searched the home of the suspect and recovered $500,000, believed to be part of the stolen property.
The HKP immediately informed their counterparts in the Mainland and requested assistance from Shenzhen PSB to locate the suspect. Close liaison and intelligence exchange were established between HKP and Shenzhen PSB which led to the arrest of the suspect and recovery of the stolen property in Shenzhen.
A Police spokesman said the successful detection of the case and recovery of the stolen property demonstrated the close co-operation between the law enforcement authorities in Hong Kong and the Mainland in combating crimes.
