***********************************************

Ove Arup & Partners HK Ltd was awarded the tender for improvement works to Castle Peak Road between Ka Loon Tsuen and Siu Lam by the Highways Department today (May 30).

Representing the Government, the Project Manager of the Major Works Project Management Office, Mr Robert Lloyd, signed the $4.6 million Tender and Construction Consultancy Agreement with Ove Arup & Partners at the department's headquarters.

Mr Lloyd said the whole section of Castle Peak Road from Area 2 of Tsuen Wan to So Kwun Tan, except the section from Ka Loon Tsuen to Siu Lam, has been widened, or is being widened, to a dual two-lane carriageway to cater for the future traffic demand.

"This section of Castle Peak Road is currently a bottleneck and requires upgrading to a dual two-lane carriageway in order to provide a continuous level of service between Tsuen Wan and So Kwun Tan," Mr Lloyd said. "The estimated cost of the works is about $700 million."

The Tender and Construction Assignment comprises two phases: tender phase and construction phase. The tender phase of the assignment will start on June 2. The construction phase is scheduled to start in March 2004 for completion in February 2008.
