Home Affairs Secretary urges community co-operation on greening

**********************************************************

Secretary for Home Affairs Dr Patrick Ho today (March 21) appealed to capital projects professionals, including town planners, architects, engineers, landscape architects and horticulturists, to assist the Government in achieving its greening objectives.

"The Government's greening work is aimed at increasing significantly the number of green areas in the urban districts, raising the standard and quality of existing green areas, and seizing every opportunity for greening in the planning and development stages of public works projects," Dr Ho told the presentation ceremony of the Outstanding Greening Project Award 2002.

Echoing the Chief Executive's Policy Address on greening, Dr Ho said: "The Government's greening policy is designed to enrich the quality of life for all through massive planting of trees and shrubs, and to carry out proper maintenance and conservation of trees and plants."

He said the obstacles associated with greening efforts in a densely populated, highly urbanized city like Hong Kong could be overcome with the support of professionals in the field.

"It is hoped that with the joint efforts of the community and the Government, we can build an environment-friendly city," he added.

The biennial Outstanding Greening Project Award is organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), in co-operation with the Hong Kong Institute of Landscape Architects and the Institute of Horticulture (Hong Kong).

The awards scheme is designed to promote environmental consciousness, foster awareness and recognition of the landscape and horticulture professions, and encourage good professional practices. Prizes are awarded in six categories -- greening concept, greening effect, horticultural maintenance, landscape design, planning/research and soft landscape works.

The programme received 55 entries from individuals, private firms, Government departments and public bodies. Panels that included landscape architects, horticulturists and environmentalists selected 22 winners, out of which one grand award was given.

The awardees are as follows:
