A $540 million contract has been awarded to Motorola Incorporated to build the Hong Kong Police Third Generation Command and Control Communications System (CCIII).
A Police spokesman said today (March 13) that the CCIII was to replace the existing system, which would reach the end of its useful life by 2004.
In 2001, the Finance Committee endorsed the creation of a new commitment of $948 million for the purpose.
The spokesman said that the contract called for Motorola to deliver a completely integrated command and control communications system consisting of four major components:
- A digital trunked radio communications system with voice and data capabilities; - A 999 emergency telephone system with automatic emergency call number and location identification capability; - A mobile computing system allowing officers to access necessary information from their radio handsets and/or mobile data terminals; and - An automatic vehicle location system that will allow dispatchers to better allocate resources to attend emergency incidents as well as a geographic information system that will allow the emergency call takers and dispatchers to more quickly and accurately identify the location of emergency incidents and police resources.
"The $540 million contract, including 9-year maintenance, represents the commitment and determination of the Government to invest in the safety and stability of Hong Kong," the spokesman said.
"The system will significantly enhance the efficiency of the Hong Kong Police and will enable it to better serve the people of Hong Kong."
The system will be introduced in three phases with New Territories Region projected to go live by end of 2004, followed by Hong Kong Island Region in mid-2005 and the Kowloon Region in early 2006.
