Transcript of Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate)

****************************************************

Following is the transcript of the media session by the Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate), Dr Patrick Ho Chi-ping, today (June 24) at the Central Government Offices:

Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate): I would like to say a few words in English. I have just met Mr. Tung and I am delighted and honoured to receive the appointment of Secretary for Home Affairs. Under the accountability system, principal officials have to feel the pulse of the public and to strengthen liaison and communication with all sectors of the community including the Legislative Council and the general public. I therefore look forward to working with all parties concerned, including colleagues of the Government. And I would do my best to serve the community in respect of my policy portfolio. Thank you very much.

Reporter: There are several criticisms about your appointment. Why did you accept it?

Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate): Well, I think it's because I believe that under the accountability system, the principal officials really have to go out to the public and establish a close relationship with all parties concerned. And this is what I would pledge my best to do.

Reporter: Someone said you do not listen and you are not attentive in sports development. Do you think you need to hear these criticisms?

Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate): Well, I would try to listen to more criticisms and more views, and I will take all these views and criticisms under advisement and they will help me to improve my policy.

Reporter: Is it true that you will ignore... sometimes ignore the opinions to you?

Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate): No, I will listen to all different types of opinions. They are all very invaluable to me.

Reporter: Is there a problem with race discrimination in Hong Kong and do you want to address it?

Secretary for Home Affairs (Designate): Well, regarding policy issues and I think I will take under advisement all the views and will discuss with the public in due course.
