About 1,500 orchids in a rich variety of over 200 species are on display at the Hong Kong Park Conservatory. Members of the public are advised to seize the golden opportunity to enjoy the blossoms of orchids over the weekend before the show closes on May 26, 2002.
The Hong Kong Orchid Show 2002, jointly presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and the Hong Kong Artistic Orchid Association, is open to the public from 9 am to 5 pm. Admission fee is $10 for adults and $5 for children, students, senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
In addition to common species like Cattleya, Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, Dendrobium and Phaphiopedilum, the rarely displayed Vanda and Ascocentrum from tropical Asia with large and beautiful flowers are also on display. Larger orchid from the Orchidaceae family, the Grammangis, are also put on show. They are characterised by their long flower stalks and dozens of spectacular spotted or striped flowers. The very scented epiphytic Maxillaria originated from the America with deep red and long lasting flowers can also be seen.
Apart from orchids, hundreds of orchid-related handicraft and stamps are on display in the show ground. There are also orchid propagation methods by seeds and tissue culture and demonstration of ink painting of orchids.
Free talks in Cantonese on cultivation of orchids will be conducted. Details are as follows:
