The Government announced today (May 6) that the Chief Executive, in his capacity as Chancellor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), has appointed Mr John Chan Cho-chak to succeed Dr Vincent Lo as Chairman of the HKUST Council for a period of one year with effect from April 1, 2002.
"We welcome Mr Chan's appointment. He has served in top positions in both the public and business sectors, and has extensive experience in community service," a Government spokesman said.
Mr Chan is currently the Managing Director of The Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Ltd and an independent non-executive director of Hang Seng Bank Ltd and Guangdong Investment Ltd. He has been actively serving as First Vice President and Executive Committee Chairman of the Community Chest of Hong Kong and as Vice-Chairman of the Employers' Federation of Hong Kong.
"With his dynamic leadership and solid record of public service, Mr Chan will lead the HKUST into the 21st century," the spokesman added.
Dr Vincent Lo was appointed as the Deputy Chairman of the HKUST Council in 1998, and has been the Chairman since 1999. Under his leadership, HKUST has made remarkable achievements in the areas of science, technology and business studies.
"Dr Lo decided not to serve another term because of his heavy business and personal commitments," the spokesman said.
In recognition of his significant contribution to the HKUST, the Chief Executive, in his capacity as Chancellor of the HKUST, has appointed Dr Vincent Lo as a member of the HKUST Court for a period of three years with effect from April 1, 2002. The HKUST will continue to benefit from Dr Lo's service in his new capacity.
The appointments to HKUST Council and Court will be gazetted this Friday (May 10).
