Returning Officer declares Tung Chee Hwa elected in Chief Executive election

*********************************************************

Mr Tung Chee Hwa has been elected uncontested in the second Chief Executive election, the Returning Officer, Mr Justice Pang Kin-kee, declared after the two-week nomination exercise closed at 5 pm today (February 28). Mr Justice Pang received only one nomination form on February 19.

"I determined that Mr Tung had fully satisfied the statutory qualifications for candidature after examining and verifying all the information supplied on the nomination form. I determined on February 19 that Mr Tung's nomination as a candidate in the 2002 Chief Executive election was valid in accordance with Section 17 of the Chief Executive Election Ordinance," he said.

"As there is only one validly nominated candidate by the close of nominations, I now declare that Mr Tung Chee Hwa is elected in the 2002 Chief Executive election under Sections 23 and 28 of the Chief Executive Election Ordinance," he said.

Mr Justice Pang said Mr Tung was validly nominated by 714 members of the Election Committee.

The name of the validly nominated candidate, the names of the Election Committee members nominating Mr Tung and the election result will be published in the Gazette on March 1.
