Fatal traffic accident at Tate's Cairn Tunnel

Police are investigating a traffic accident at Tate's Cairn Tunnel in Wong Tai Sin this (September 8) afternoon in which two men died and 17 other were injured.

At about 4.15 pm, a bus, a light goods vehicle, a medium goods vehicle and a motorcycle were travelling in sequence along the Tate's Cairn Tunnel towards Kowloon.

The four vehicles later slowed down due to traffic congestion.

A bus travelling on the same lane reportedly failed to stop in time and rammed the motorcycle from behind whereas the bus was also collided by a following light goods vehicle, resulting in a chain collision of the six vehicles.

After the impact, the 39-year-old driver of the motorcycle and his 21-year-old passenger were trapped underneath the medium goods vehicle.

Sustaining serious injuries, the two men were rescued and sent to the United Christian Hospital where they were certified dead.

Of the other injured, three men and a woman were sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital while five men and eight women were rushed to the Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment.

Investigations by the Special Investigation Team, Traffic, Kowloon East are underway.
