It is a show delivering explosive energy, powerful pulse and fierce rhythms; it is a show being full of physical and emotional experience; and it is the show by the globally renowned West Africa percussion group WOFA.
WOFA will be staging their stunning performances at 8pm on August 30 and 31 (Thursday and Friday) at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Auditorium. The group will deliver hip-swinging, hair-flying dances as well as complex and layered rhythms of tradition-based works infused with creative wit.
WOFA is nowadays one of the most promising independent companies of West Africa. It is a group of ten young musicians and dancers from the Soussou clan in Guinea who have been working together since 1993. Under the artistic leadership of master drummer Francois Kokelaere from France, the traditional rhythms of percussion remain the primary material yet rearranged in a more contemporary way with the contribution of acting nuances. Following their participation in Paris at the 200th Anniversary Bastille Day Celebration on the Champs Elysees, they have toured several times all over Europe, North America, Australia and Southeast Asia.
One of the programmes in "The Rhythm and The Beat" percussion series presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, tickets priced at $220, $150 and $100 are now available at all URBTIX outlets. Half price concessions will be granted to senior citizens, people with disabilities, full-time students and Comprehensive Social Security Assistant Recipients (Limited student and CSSA tickets are available on a first-come, first-served basis). A 10% discount is also available for Friends of LCSD performing venues.
In addition, the group will bring a free outdoor performance to be held at the Kwai Tsing Theatre Piazza at 6pm on August 29 (Wednesday). It will surely give audience a warm-up by featuring some excerpts of their forthcoming performances.
