The 2001 Honours List will be published in the Government Gazette today (July 1). This is the fourth full Honours List since the reunification.

The Chief Executive has accorded an honour or award to a total of 266 persons in this year's Honours List, including:

This year's recipients are from all walks of life. They have been given an honour or award in recognition of their significant personal contribution to Hong Kong or for their dedicated public and community service.

The presentation ceremony will be held later this year, tentatively in October.

Mr KWAN is awarded the BBS for his valuable contribution to the development of Chinese medicine and good practice of local Chinese medicine practitioners in Hong Kong.

Medal for Bravery (Bronze)

Citations

Ms WONG Suk-wah, Assistant Officer II, is awarded the MBB in recognition of the exemplary acts of gallantry displayed in the riot at the Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre on 4 June 2000. She was on duty at the Control Room of the Centre when it was besieged by some 400 inmates. The latter smashed the security windows of the Control Room and threatened the staff inside with iron pipes and stones. At one point, they even threatened to set fire to the room. With complete disregard for her own safety, Ms WONG kept control of the room and maintained vital communication with the back-up assistance outside and directed firemen and ambulance crew to attend to emergencies. She demonstrated high devotion to service and exemplary courage during a life-threatening situation.

Ms YEUNG Wai-kuen, Assistant Officer II, is awarded the MBB in recognition of the exemplary acts of gallantry displayed in the riot at the Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre on 4 June 2000. The latter smashed the security windows of the Control Room and threatened the staff inside with iron pipes and stones. At one point, they even threatened to set fire to the room. With complete disregard for her own safety, Ms YEUNG assisted in the continued functioning of the room. She demonstrated high devotion to service and exemplary courage during a life-threatening situation.

Mr KWONG Kwan-ming, Chief Officer, is awarded the MBB in recognition of the exemplary acts of gallantry displayed in the riot at the Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre on 4 June 2000. He was one of the first senior officers to arrive at the scene and commanded an anti-riot assault against the rioters who were attacking the staff and were fighting with the Vietnamese inmates. Confronting the rioters personally, he successfully rescued the injured police officers surrounded by them. Voluntarily putting his life to danger when performing his duties, Mr KWONG demonstrated high devotion to service and exemplary courage.
