The three Chinese Sydney Olympic fencing medallists invited to Hong Kong by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) for a series of roving demonstrations to promote the fencing sport, in their first two days of public appearance, have enchanted over 10,000 captive audience with their excellent fencing skills, rousing a keen interest in the fencing sport in the community.
The three fencing medallists were Dong Zhao-zhi, Liang-qin and Li-na. Wang Hai-bin, who was scheduled to join his other three team mates, missed the Hong Kong tour for health reasons.
Their fencing demonstrations at the Opening Ceremony of the Healthy Exercise for All Campaign at Kowloon Park on Sunday and at Sheung Shui Lung Sum Avenue Indoor Recreation Centre yesterday received high acclaim from the public.
This morning, members of the National Fencing Team started a series of visits to a number of primary and secondary schools. The first secondary school on the visit itinerary was the Chong Gene Hang College at Chaiwan where they gave talks, demonstrations and play-in sessions to over 400 students and teachers. The Hon. Treasurer of the Hong Kong Amateur Fencing Association, Mr Franky Yuen and the Fencing Coach of the Sports Institute, Mr Ringo Lo acted as the narrators.
The morning's visit marked the beginning of the sports demonstration series under the Sport Education Programme which is one of the subsidary programmes of the School Sports Programme jointly organised by the LCSD and the Education Department. By holding fencing and other sport demonstrations in schools, the Sport Education Programme aims to arouse the students' interest in sports, enhance their knowledge in sports and guide them to actively participate in sports.
A total of four public roving demonstrations by the Chinese National Fencing Team have been scheduled this week. The third performance will be held to-night (June 26) from 7:00a.m. to 9:00p.m. at the Harbour Road Indoor Games Hall while the last demonstration will take place to-morrow (June 27) from 7:00p.m. to 9:00p.m at the Tsing Yi Indoor Recreation Centre.
