New Bypass to Relieve Traffic Burden of Kam Tin Road

****************************************************

A new bypass will be in place by mid-2003 to relieve traffic on the existing section of Kam Tin Road through the Kam Tin town centre.

The Highways Department today (May 31) signed a $153-million contract with Zhuhai International Economic and Technical Cooperation Corporation for the construction of Kam Tin Bypass. Representing the Department was the Project Manager (Major Works), Mr Bob Lloyd.

The project involves the construction of a 1.3 kilometre dual two-lane carriageway, two roundabouts and two pedestrian subways. The Bypass will be connected to the existing Kam Tin Road at the western and eastern ends of the Kam Tin town centre.

Upon completion, the bypass will also provide the required capacity for the new roads to tie in with the operation of West Rail.

Construction will commence on June 1, 2001 for completion in mid-2003.

End/Thursday, May 31, 2001
