Chinese Painting, Calligraphy and Seal Engraving Exhibition to be held in December

************************************************************

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, The "'Best of Visual Arts' Scheme - Expression-- Chinese Painting, Calligraphy and Seal Engraving Exhibition by Kwong Leung" will be held at the Tsuen Wan Town Hall Exhibition Gallery from December 7 to 13 (Thursday to Wednesday) and the Tuen Mun Town Hall Exhibition Gallery between December 15 and 21 (Friday and Thursday).

This free-admission touring exhibition showcases Kwong's recent works on ink painting, calligraphy and seal engraving. About 100 pieces of work, covering small, huge and vertical scrolls, will be put on display.

Kwong's ink paintings are characterized by the vigorous strokes for the creation of his ideal landscape. His works bespeak his personal philosophy of life and sentiments through the mediums of stippling, imagery and colour.

His calligraphy works are mainly on running and cursive script. The variations in brushstroke and the flowing of brushwork display his vigour while the writings and poems on the works reveal his sentiments and taste.

Kwong emphasizes that an artist should instil his ideas in seal engraving. Hence, he has employed his superb craftsmanship of seal-cutting to express his underlying feelings on the tiny but exquisite stones. The works on display are marked by different themes and series accompanied by some calligraphic works of relevant ideas to arouse the audiences' imagination.

Kwong realizes that works of arts are multifaceted. They are not only for record, collection and identification purposes; they can also cultivate our interests, decorate our living environment, convey our thoughts and feelings as well as mirror artists' aspirations. Kwong puts special emphasis on expression in calligraphy, painting and seal-cutting. For this reason, he adopts the title Expression for this exhibition.

Kwong Leung graduated from Department of Fine Arts, Chinese University of Hong Kong and got the degree of Master of Philosophy at Department of Chinese, University of Hong Kong. He has devoted himself to the promotion of Chinese arts. Apart from giving lessons in painting and calligraphy, he has also written theses and participated in joint exhibitions of painting, calligraphy and seal engraving. He has organized many exhibitions to display his own works as well as those of his students. His publications include The Art of Seal Engraving, a selection of stone seals; Expression and The Art of Calligraphy, albums of paintings and calligraphy; On the Journey, a poetry anthology; and An Overview of Fine Arts, a commentary on fine arts funded by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council. He has also won the Freeman Scholarship offered by the Vermont Studio Centre in the United States, where he will participate in arts creation workshops, cultural exchanges and exhibitions in March and April next year.
