A team representing the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government will attend a hearing to be held by the United Nations Committee Against Torture, the treaty monitoring body for the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (CAT), in Geneva on May 4 and 5.
A Government spokesman said today (May 2): "The six-member team will attend the hearing as part of China's delegation. During the hearing, the Committee will examine China's report which incorporates the report on the HKSAR. The team will answer questions raised by the Committee on the implementation of the CAT in the HKSAR."
Meanwhile, the HKSAR Government has submitted an updating report on relevant developments since September 30, 1998, the cut-off day for the HKSAR report, which was submitted to the Committee in May last year as part of China's third report under the Convention.
The updating report has been posted on the Home Affairs Bureau's homepage (http://www.info.gov.hk/hab/new/index_e.htm). Copies are also available on request from HAB (contact Mr Ricky Leung at Tel. 2835 2065).
The team will leave for Geneva today. Mr Stephen Wong, Deputy Solicitor General, will lead the team with Mr John Dean, Principal Assistant Secretary for Home Affairs, as deputy. Other members include Miss Eliza Yau, Principal Assistant Secretary for Security; Mr David Wong, Principal Assistant Secretary for Security; Miss Anita Ng, Government Counsel; and Ms Eva Wong, Senior Information Officer.
