Gritty Spirit of Pat Sin Leng Fire Survivors Praised

****************************************************

The tenacity of spirit and positive attitude shown by the six young survivors of the Pat Sin Leng fire are worthy of emulation by all youths, the Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Shelley Lau, said today (Thursday).

Mrs Lau said this at a Christmas Party hosted by the Chief Executive, Mr Tung Chee Hwa, and Mrs Betty Tung, at the Government House for about 100 youngsters. The party was attended by six of the survivors and various youngsters, some of them physically handicapped.

"They have shown that given the necessary support and understanding, they can overcome any adversity and become useful members of the society," Mrs Lau added.

Two of the three outstanding young persons mentioned in the 1999 Policy Address - Miss Kwong Lai Yin and Miss Chan Man Fong - were at the party as volunteers to help entertain the youngsters by participating in some interactive games with the young guests.

Other volunteers sang and performed magic at the party organised by the Home Affairs Department.
