Relive wonderful moments in Sports Promotion Carnival

*****************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Provisional Regional Council:

Members of the public should not miss the opportunity to keep abreast of the territory's sports development and achievements, past and present, in the Sports Promotion Carnival organised by the Provisional Regional Council (Pro RC) between November 12 (Friday) and 21 (Sunday).

The Sports Promotion Carnival is part of the millennium celebrations aimed at introducing the development of five sports activities -- badminton, table tennis, football, swimming and basketball -- in the territory.

In the exhibition, visitors will be able to relive wonderful moments in the sports arena through hundred of photographs: the homecoming of Ms Amy Chan and Mr Chan Chi-choi after winning a gold medal of badminton mixed doubles in the 1990 Commonwealth Games; the exciting football match between South China and KMB in the 60s; the first visit to Hong Kong of the National Table-Tennis Team of China in 1964; the much-remembered cross-harbour swimming as well as the British National Basketball Team's match with the Hong Kong Basketball Team in 1975.

Visitors to the exhibition can also watch video shows demonstrating the basic skills of these five sports and playing wonderful moments of international competitions such as the World Cup Final 1994, diving competition of the Olympic Games 1992, the Asian Youth Basketball Championship and Asian Badminton Tournament 1993.

Members of the public are welcome to visit the exhibition from 9 am to 10 pm from November 12 (Friday) to 14 (Sunday) at Yuen Wo Road Indoor Recreation Centre in Sha Tin and from November 19 (Friday) to 21 (Sunday) at Wai Tsuen Indoor Recreation Centre in Tsuen Wan.

Apart from the exhibition, the carnival also features nine sports promotion events such as invitational tournaments, demonstrations and play-in sessions; as well as a sports seminar hosted by sports commentator, Mr Lee Tak-neng, and given by veterans of the five selected sports.

Admission to the exhibition is free. Members of the public who wish to join the sports promotion events can obtain free admission tickets and information kits at the district offices of the Regional Services Department. Enquiries can be made on 2609 4579 and 2692 1315.
