The number of rape cases in Tuen Mun drops significantly following the Police's vigorous enforcement actions against sex attacks and implementation of various precautionary measures to prevent the crime.
Police have detected all three rape cases reported in the district in the first seven months of this year. The figure showed a drastic decrease from the 11 rape cases in 1998.
Eight of these 11 cases have already been solved.
As for indecent assaults, 35 of the 52 reported cases in the district last year have been solved, representing a detection rate of 67 per cent.
The first seven months of this year saw a detection rate of 54 per cent, with 24 of the 44 indecent assault reports being detected.
"This shows that Tuen Mun Police treat sexual offences seriously and spare no efforts in tackling the crime," a police spokesman said.
"The Police's vigorous enforcement actions against the crime are accompanied by a series of precautionary measures and publicity to increase women's alertness on sex attackers."
"Tuen Mun Police organise regular briefings for women residents at community centres, schools and local organisations telling them how to minimise the chances for being sexually attacked," the spokesman noted.
A total of three seminars attended by more than 120 local residents have been held so far this year.
Moreover, posters on the crime are put up on the notice boards at all 11 public housing estates in the district to remind women to be on the alert of the crime.
"The installation of closed-circuit televisions at public housing estates also help deter the crime as it increases local residents' awareness of suspicious persons," the spokesman added.
