Secondary 6 Admission Procedure begins on Tuesday

*************************************************

The Secondary 6 (S6) Admission Procedure will begin next Tuesday (August 10), date of release of the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) results.

A spokesman for the Education Department today (Friday) said that the procedure was to assist HKCEE participants to seek S6 places in public sector schools, and as far as possible, to continue sixth form education in their own schools.

It also maximises the utilisation of subsidised S6 places and minimises students' anxiety in seeking school places, he said.

This year, some 24 000 S6 places in public sector secondary schools are available for application. Schools are expected to strictly follow the admission procedure in admitting S6 students.

Students with 14 points or more from the best six subjects in one sitting of the HKCEE should apply to their own or linked schools in the morning of August 10 (Stage I) or apply to other schools in the afternoon of August 10 and on August 11 (Stage II).

Those who satisfy the minimum A-level entry requirement should apply to their own or linked schools in the morning of August 12 (Stage III) or apply to other schools in the afternoon of August 12 and on August 13 (Stage IV).

Students studying at the following types of schools are reminded to check with their own schools what their linked school is :

* schools which do not operate S6 classes

* schools which operate only one stream of S6

* private schools

* evening schools

Application for S6 places and registration of students in Stages I and III will be done within the same day.

As for Stages II and IV, some schools will inform students the result of their application within half an hour after interview and proceed to register students while the others will receive applications first and announce the results before the end of the respective stages, that is, at 2.30 pm on August 11 and August 13. Successful applicants should register with the school before 4.30 pm on the same day.

Information on the admission method of various schools can be acquired from schools or from District Education Offices (DEO). Such information is also available at the Education Department Homepage at http://www.info.gov.hk/ed.

Results of the central allocation will be displayed at the centres and DEO on August 19 (Thursday) at 9 am. Successful candidates should register with the schools before 1 pm that day.

The spokesman urged students to consult their teachers and careers masters on the choice of subject streams and schools.

Once a student accepts the offer of an S6 place, the perforated S6 admission slip attached to the HKCEE result notice will be retained by the admitting school for record.

"Therefore, students should consider carefully before accepting the offer. No school will admit a student without the S6 admission slip," the spokesman said.

Information leaflets and summary tables on the S6 Admission Procedure have been distributed to the students concerned this February. Copies of the leaflet and summary table are also obtainable at the DEO, District Office Public Enquiry Service Centres and from the ED's Homepage at http://www.info.gov.hk/ed.

Details on the five stages of the procedure will also be available at the department's 24-hour Automatic Telephone Enquiry System on 2891 0088 from August 10 to the end of September.

To facilitate students to apply S6 places during the admission procedure, a number of channels for disseminating information on S6 places vacancies will be arranged this year. These include :

* Display of information : Information of school place vacancies will be displayed at schools and all DEO from 2 pm on August 10 and August 12 and from 9 am on August 11 and August 13.

* Paging service : Information is also available through a paging service. Renting of the pager is entirely on a voluntary basis.

The list of venues with public computers is available on the web sites located at http://www.igsd.gov.hk and http://www.info.gov.hk/itbb/index.htm.

The spokesman noted that the Education Department would continue to provide the media with lists of schools having S6 vacancies for Stage II on August 11 and Stage IV on August 13.

"Students are free to choose any means to gain access to the vacancy information," he added.

This year, schools in Tai Po District participating in the S6 Admission Procedure will accept applications under a joint admission scheme in Stage II.

A Joint Admission Centre will be set up at the Carmel Holy Word Secondary School at 10 Tai Wo Road, Tai Po to facilitate students to find places within the district. Application forms and handbooks will be available at the Information Centre at Tai Wo Neighbourhood Community Centre on August 10 to August 11.

A central hotline at the telephone numbers 2126 5291, 2126 5293 and 2126 5296 will be set up from August 10 to August 19 to help students seeking advice or clarification about the admission procedures, and to handle any complaints.
