Appointments to the Hong Kong Examinations Authority

The Government announced today (Friday) the re-appointment of Dr Joseph Chow Ming-kuen as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Examinations Authority (HKEA), and Dr Tam Man-kwan as the Deputy Chairman for another term starting August 1, 1999.

The following serving members have been re-appointed for another term:

* Miss Eliza Chan Ching-har, Consultant of Jewkes and Partners;

* Mr Kwok But, Vice-Principal of Sing Yin Secondary School;

* Mr Kwok Wing-keung, Principal of Carmel Holy Word Secondary School;

* Mr Lai Shu-ho, Principal of The Mission Covenant Church Holm Glad College;

* Mr Ronald Lu Yuen-cheung, Managing Director of Ronald Lu and Partners (HK) Ltd;

* Mr Raymond Wong Kwong-wai, Teacher of New Method College; and

* Mr Raymond Young, Deputy Secretary for Education and Manpower.

The new members appointed to the Authority are:

* Mr Hui Yung-chung, Teacher of Yu Chun Keung Memorial College No. 2;

* Mr Ma Ching-yuk, Director and Manager of Tai Sang Bank Limited;

* Professor Stuart Richmond, Dean of School of Creative Arts, Sciences & Technology of The Hong Kong Institute of Education;

* Mrs Diana Wong Ip Wai-ying, Principal of St Paul's Secondary School;

* Mrs Wong Mak Kit-ling, Principal of Shau Kei Wan Government Secondary School; and

* Mr Paul Yau Yat-heem, Principal of Queen Maud Secondary School.

Instead of the usual appointment term of three years, all the above appointments and re-appointments will be for a period of two years and one month, starting August 1, 1999 and ending August 31, 2001. This arrangement will align the term of office of the Authority with the school year cycle which commences on September 1 each year.

The Secretary for Education and Manpower thanked the retiring members, Professor Raymond McDonald Anderson, Mr Lawrence Chan Hok-man, Mr Cheng Chi-leung, Mr Sheung Kwok-chu, Mrs Grace Tam Cheung Kit-ying and Mr Yau Hon-kee, for their contributions towards the work of the HKEA.

Mr Wong also said that under the leadership of Dr Joseph Chow and with the hard work of the Authority, he believed the examination services provided by the HKEA, as well as the interface between our public examinations and school curriculum, would be further strengthened to the benefit of our students.
