A 45-year-old Hong Kong man in connection with the kidnap and murder of a 13-year-old boy was returned to Hong Kong Police (HKP) by Zhuhai Public Security Bureau (PSB) this (Tuesday) afternoon.
Senior Superintendent, Crime, Kowloon East, Mr Choy Kin-cheung, representing the HKP, took over the custody of the suspect as well as a ransom of $2.4 million and some exhibits relating to the case at a brief ceremony held in Zhuhai today.
The victim was abducted in Hong Kong on April 21 this year and was later killed. His body was subsequently dumped on a steep slope in Fei Ngo Shan.
The culprits later demanded a ransom of $8 million from the boy's family for the release of the victim. Arrangements were then made for one of the main suspects to collect a ransom of $2.4 million.
After extensive investigations and exchange of background information and intelligence among the law enforcement agencies concerned, two men and a woman were arrested in Hong Kong, two other men in Zhuhai and another woman in Macau earlier this month.
HKP also discovered part of suspected remains of the boy, including the skull and some bones, in Fei Ngo Shan last Sunday (July 4).
Mr Choy said following the arrest was made, HKP had submitted a request to their Mainland counterparts for the return of a 45-year-old Hong Kong resident arrested in Zhuhai as well as the $2.4 million ransom.
"Today's return of the suspect and exhibits including the $2.4 million ransom signifies the close co-operation and exchange of intelligence between the two law enforcement agencies in crime investigations," Mr Choy noted.
On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Mr Eddie Hui Ki-on, and the family members of the victim, Mr Choy thanked the Zhuhai PSB and other relevant units in detecting the case.
The suspect returned to HKP today is now being detained by Regional Crime Unit, Kowloon East, for enquiries.
Among the six culprits, a 37-year-old man arrested in Hong Kong was charged with murder and appeared in San Po Kong Magistracy yesterday (Monday).
Another 28-year-old man and a 38-year-old woman arrested in Hong Kong were each released on bail of $20,000 in cash and $20,000 in self-recognizance yesterday. They are required to report back later this month.
