Prevent theft on beaches and swimming pools

*******************************************

Police today (Tuesday) appealed to the public to take the necessary anti-theft precautions on beaches or public swimming pools.

A Police spokesman said that cash, jewellery and credit cards were some of the things that lured thieves.

"People can avoid falling prey to theft on beaches or public swimming pools by adopting some simple security measures," the spokesman said.

The public are advised not to carry large amounts of money or many valuables to beaches or public swimming pools.

"Don't leave your property unattended even for the shortest time. Always keep your property in a safe place. Ask your friends to keep an eye on your belongings while you are swimming," the spokesman said.

"Put your property inside a locker at a public swimming pool. If possible, a padlock can be added to make it more secure," he advised.

An unlocked car or an open window of a car is always very tempting to thieves.

"When you drive to a beach or public swimming pool, don't leave your money and valuables visible in the compartment," the spokesman said.

"If you are not able to carry the valuables with you, keep them locked in the boot," he added.

"A little effort from the public will be very helpful to prevent theft on beaches or public swimming pools, which will allow Police to have more time to fight other more serious crimes and make Hong Kong a safer place," the spokesman said.
